Umrah with Family

I performed Umrah in April 2017 and I spent five days in Makkah and five days in Medinah. Luckily enough my husband, daughter, two sons and I went when the weather was bearably hot and we were able to enjoy our experience and visit Masjid Al Haram every day.

Before we went to Makkah, the waiting was unbearable because we were all so excited to visit the holy city and when the day finally arrived, I felt mixed feelings….what was it going to be like?, what if I didn’t perform Umrah in the best way possible? and most importantly would it be plain sailing with three children? Although these anguishes were in my mind, alhumdillah everything went smoothly and the experience was prodigious.

We had an indirect flight to Saudi Arabia, first we stopped in Beirut, where we changed in to our clothes for Umrah and prayed with intention to complete Umrah and then we arrived in Jeddah and went to perform Umrah in Mekkah. I remember saying talbiyah “Labbaika la shareeka laka labbaik. Innal hamda wal ni’matha laka wal mulk, laa shareeka lak.”

We kept on saying talbiyah, until we saw the holy kaaba and before seeing the kaaba, I was filled with anticipation, I didn’t know what to expect, but I certainly felt like something special was happening. When I first caught a glimpse of the kaaba, it felt like my heart had skipped a beat and I felt my heart pump instantaneously with excitement. It was a extraordinary, yet beautiful feeling, a feeling that I had never felt before.

We performed Umrah two times in total, as well as visiting the masjid to pray everyday. It is an experience I will never forget and one of my greatest memories that will always stay close to my heart.

As a parent I would strongly recommend that you must take care if you have minors because there is a lot of hustle and bustle in the masjid and children could get hurt or lost if left unattended.

Furthermore make sure you drink plenty of water because it is extremely hot in Makkah and zam zam is offered for free, so do drink plenty of the best water in the world!

As well as performing Umrah, we were luckily enough to visit sacred spots like Jabal al-Nour, which was breathtaking. Our journey was extremely spiritual and one the most amazing experiences of my life. I feel it has made me a better person and it has brought me closer towards Islam. I feel extremely privileged and proud to have performed Umrah, especially with the ones I love.

For all those people thinking to go on vacation, I would strongly recommend to visit the house of Allah first, this is a must!

As a true believer of Islam, it is important that we remember that death can come anybody anytime. So in firm belief of this, we should aim to perform Umrah as soon as we can and with strong intention.
